Patel Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Government of India 11th January' 1999 New Delhi In August, 1997, in pursuance of the decision of the Cabinet Committee on the Economic Affairs, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) was given the functions performed earlier by the Bureau of Industrial Costs and Prices (BICP) and the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals in respect of pricing of drugs. Accordingly, the newly created body of experts undertakes studies on the pricing of bulk drugs and fixes/revises their prices and also of the formulations, as per the provision of DPCO, 1995. In addition, the responsibility of enforcing the provisions of the DPCO, 1995, monitoring the availability and prices of drugs and advising the Government on drug policy matters was also assigned to this newly created Authority. I am happy to note that with in a short span of about eighteen months, the NPPA has performed in a manner which has brought this organization, the required recognition by the Industry, trade and consumers. |
